Boris Deutsch studied art in Riga, Latvia and Berlin before moving to the United States in 1916. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1920, he supporting himself through commercial art and movie sets. Deutsch melded childhood memories into his paintings, bringing European art roots to a developing avant-garde scene in California. Through his striving for simplified form, Boris Deutsch contributed to our understanding of Modernism in Los Angeles.
