PRINTS AND PRINTMAKERS IN WOOD
Compositions carved into wood have long been valued by print artists. We offer woodcuts and woodengravings by notable artists: PETER KRASNOW, ISAAC FRIEDLANDER, WERNER DREWES, PAUL LANDACRE, HAROLD TREFREY, JOHN BERNHARDT.
.
JOHN BERNHARDT (1921-1963) Radio Still Life carved into wood, creating visceral cuts that are almost brutal!…that’s why he used wood for expression!
ISAAC FRIEDLANDER (1890-1968) In his woodengraving ‘My People’, Friedlander contrasted black and white sharply.
WERNER DREWES (1899-1985) Drewes was facile in the strong use of wood to good effect.
PETER KRASNOW (1887-1979) ‘felt’ mated to wood in the few prints he created. We offer “Lot”, Krasnow’s interpretation of the Biblical parable of faith. In his carved massive and burnished organic sculptural forms, he found woodcuts conducive to fully describe his subjects.
PAUL LANDACRE (1893-1963) created these dramatic portraits to illustrate catalogues of works by individual musicians
HAROLD E. TREFREY (1897-1983) Trefrey used multiple colors on a single block, inking each color separately in this color woodcut.
