LYNTON KISTLER’S STONE LITHOGRAPHY MISSION
In early 20th century, after assisting in his father’s letterpress studio, printing menus and other commercial jobs, LYNTON KISTLER researched, experimented and refined the technique of stone lithography by following the published descriptions and instructions of German printer Alois Senefelder(1771-1837).
Lynton Kistler encouraged the use of BAVARIAN STONE LITHOGRAPH…and his efforts were supported by his early friendship with artist/teacher Jean Charlot at the Art Students’ League in New York City. Through Jean Charlot’s enthusiastic support, Kistler’s name spread through the Print world. He was soon working with many artists in this medium; the artists were also encouraged by favorable ‘terms’: i.e. Kistler would split an edition with the artist in lieu of charging a fee for his printing services!
With the Ford Foundation’s support, June Wayne’s founded the
TAMARIND LITHOGRAPHY WORKSHOP in Los Angeles in 1960
…establishing early collaboration between Artist and Printer on the Stone!
