PRINTMAKERS

  California 1930’s-1960’s

PRINTMAKING developed in Europe from simple woodcuts made on
planks or slats by 9th century preachers to illustrate their
sermons to illiterate parishioners….then, with the
invention of the printing press in the 15th century, with
widely accessible materials… into images and books. The
wealthy shipowners and burghers of the 15th and 16th
centuries developed a taste for fine art in their homes and
to commemorate their families.

The evolution from engraved armor for the battlefield- to luminous
landscapes… to portraits for wooing partners …and
fairytales in the nursery … continues.

To create images for repeated impressions, PRINTMAKING –
engraving and etching on metal, woodcuts and woodengraving
on wood, stone and offset lithography and then stencils and
screen printing in the WPA/FAP of the 1930s – PRINTMAKING
served many artists and delivered their ‘messages’ to us!

These Pals: Ynez Johnston, Leonard Edmondson and Emerson Woelffer
lived walking distance from each other and came into the Gallery
together frequently; I enjoyed their company also! .. They were fun!

YOU can make your office, studio, home more beautiful,
exciting and interesting! The offerings here present an
inventory that spans centuries…and that we hope will
stimulate you to enrich your spaces.

Do share your goals with us….and let us help you achieve
them! …Satisfyingly and pleasurably.
