RUPERT DEESE
b.1924
Rupert J. Deese graduated from Pomona College in 1950 and, while at Claremont Graduate School in California, taught at the Mt. San Antonio College. From 1964 to 1983 he designed dinnerware forms and patterns for Franciscan Pottery Inc. , never abandoning the wheel at his studio. Upon his retirement from Franciscan, his creative energies brought forth experimental glazes and an unerring aesthetic for pure function.
Deese’s stoneware is ripe with organic forms,
radiating patterns, lustrous glazes and seductive burnished surfaces.
He is stimulated to solve the problems in innovative design and decoration
of his high fired pots, always attentive to the useful qualities
of each piece.
