The Chicano Mural Movement in Los Angeles 1970s-1990s

In the early 1970s, as part of the civil rights movements, Chicano artists turned to mural painting, inspired by the art and philosophies of Los Tres Grandes- Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros,: These were mural painted by the 'Los Four,' Carlos Almaraz, Gilberto Lujan, Willie Herron, Roberto de la Rocha(and Judith Hernandez). Many of these murals no longer exist The political and social environment in which they were created is reflected in those mural and lost. Also revealed are the influences of their aesthetic rods.

Tobey C. Moss Gallery is linking to those roots through the current exhibition tasting `Latin Flavors'. Paintings, prints and drawings by Rufino Tamayo ,Jean Charlot, Leopoldo Mendez, Pablo O'Higgins, lsidoro Ocampo, Francisco Toledo and Francisco Mora are among the seventy works presented.

With the social revolution, new mural movements are having a lasting affect o n the landscapes of Southern California, the U S Southwest - and the United States broadly. In this more recent period, "East Los Streetscapers" : David Botello, Paul Botello, Gronk, Wayne Alaniz Healey and Asco' were mentored by their rich heritage.
