Studied at University of Idaho, Academy of Advertising Art, SF and Chouinard Art Institute, LA. 1942 - 1946 he was in the Army Signal Corp with one semester at Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. Always painting, he returned to LA, in 1947, to teach at Chouinard and then at the Jepson School of Art. Using 'pure' pigments, he began hard edge abstractions in 1952 - his 'hunch' paintings. He was one of the 'Four Abstract Classicists' with John McLaughlin, Lorser Feitelson, Karl Benjamin, exhibited at LACMA in 1959.
