During a lengthy and tedious recuperation
from tuberculosis, John Bernhardt developed an interest in art. In
1947, he enrolled in Columbia University in New York to complement that
interest and and soon began exhibiting his relief prints. He
married and moved his family to Mexico between 1956 and 1959, a move that
had a great impact on his artistic development. He created prints,
paintings and explored assemblage, all showing the influences of Abstract
Expressionism and of Mexican master, Jose Clemente Orozco. John Bernhardt
returned to the United States in 1959, settling in Santa Barbara, where
Assemblage began to dominate his aesthetic expression. Unfortunately,
his sudden death at the age of 42 cut short a creative career.
