JAY RIVKIN
In Two and Three Dimensions

May 12-June 30, 2007

Opening Reception: Saturday May 12th, 2 to 5pm

JAY RIVKIN, The Planets
JAY RIVKIN, Observatory

JAY RIVKIN’s life was filled with creativity.  From her early days as a dress designer to her mature work in collage, assemblage and drawing, Rivkin’s ingenuity has never failed to amaze.  Her artistic vision was further proven through her creativity until her death in 2006 at the age of 90.

Rivkin worked as a draughtsman in an architects office.  That sense of architectonics comes through in many of her works, including her etchings on Plexiglas, created in the 1970s and 1980s.

This strong sense of underlying structure is also evident in her more recent collage work, such as the Recycled Series.  In this series, Rivkin employed cardboard, paper bags and other “recyclables” in her pointed commentary on post-consumer waste.

Rivkin also had a “way” with pencil...we will be showcasing her elegant line drawings such as Before the Rain, an exquisite rendering of an umbrella.  This graphite drawing includes tears in the sheet to evoke three-dimensional clouds.
